Your Neighbor in Real Estate: Homage to the Land

Homage to the Land

Homage to the Land

In 1936 Margaret Mitchell wrote the only novel published during her lifetime, “Gone With the Wind”, and for which she received a Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award.”  Three short years later, her novel was transformed on the big screen and has become one of the most beloved movies of all time, and one of the most grossing ones after adjusting for inflation.

Clark GableIn doing some research on my most favorite movie, I could not believe  that it was released in 1939. Can’t be, I thought. But sure enough, I have to believe the history books. The reason I thought it was released during my childhood was because MGM (Metro Goldwyn Meyer) would re-release this film every few years. It is said that this movie kept MGM studios in the black for many years. It received 10 Academy Awards, the most received for a long time, until Ben-Hur in 1960.

Before I loved the movie, I loved the book. This is one of those rare films that has migrated well to the screen, maybe because it is an almost four hour movie! It was among the first of major films shot in color, winning the first Academy Award for Best Cinematogrophy.

For me, this great movie relates to real estate in three very important ways:

  • It portrays the fierce love of the land by many of our previous caretakers
  • It is inspirational in showing that despite many obstacles, from the burning of Atlanta, the Civil War, and the Reconstruction period, the place one calls home will always rise from the ashes.Vivien Leigh
  • And in a funny way, the movie gave us many quips still in vogue today. One that I quote often, depending on the circumstances, and which can definitely refer to some real estate transactions is “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give damn!” (Rhett Butler to Scarlett O’Hara).   :)

Many people today are still experiencing this movie for the first time. Do yourself a favor, splurge and get lost in this wonderful movie.

I LOVED this movie and nice connection to real estate!  Didn't read the book but after reading your post, I may have to add the book to my growing list of "Must Reads!"  Great quote from the film, too :)

Hi Carie, thanks for your comment. The book is a classic.

Hi Sandy! I could watch this movie over and over! I never get tired of Scarlett and Rhett! I like the way you connected the movie to real estate - good job!

Hi Rose, Me too! I noticed that they have come out with a collectors version on dvd that includes a lot of extras. I think I might have to hint heavily for this as a birthday gift from my kids. :)

You're of Tara was driving Scarlett to succeed, to overcome adversity.

And whether Rhett doesn't give a damn, it's Scarlett's resolve that she'll never be hungry again that will ensure she will prevail.

That's what's driving ME! Fear of not having any money, and fear of not being able to eat (especially me, being such a foodie).

Sandy, It was a great movie and does deserve to be revisited. Your analogy is good as Scarlett you will succeed!

PS,Loved your comment on Chicken Wars Today!

Sandy, I have so enjoyed this movie challenge. Everyone has communicated to eloquently their connection to the movie. The judges will have a tough time choosing. I know I would.

Sandy, Gone With The Wind is one of my favorite movies of all time!!! I haven't read the book, but I've seen the movie a few times in English and once in French (when I was living in France years ago)...and I remember the infamous line, "Franchement, ma chere..." :)

Hi Barbara-Jo,  You chose a movie that I had never seen. I am going to check that one out.

Hi Pacita, we do things differently when it affects whether or not we eat, true! :)

Hi Ellen, thanks for stopping by after the Chicken Wars.

Hi Tammie, it was fun.

Hi Leilani, why do things always sound better in French?

Very nice post Sandy, "Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn," could certainly relate to Real Estate. Ha. Best of luck, you might just be in the top of luck, Scarlett, er Sandy.

Good morning Sandy -

I really shouldn't even tell this but I've never seen the movie or read the book “Gone With the Wind.”  You have lit a fire under me now and it's on the To Do list.  I just turned to Debbie and said we need to check out "Gone With the Wind."  It's a date :)

Enjoy a great day my friend.
