The Flowering of Ventura County
Not only is Ventura County blessed with a great climate, but we are also home to many fruit, vegetable and flower gardens.
The soil in the Oxnard plain has long been praised as a premier growing medium.
With so much flora abundance around us, it no wonder that a lot of retail businesses devote substantial space in their stores to showing off the vibrant hues of the most popular ones.
Not only do our retail shops entice us with their wares , but many clubs exist as a forum for those addicted to their flower 'pot.' They meet monthly to exchange ideas, information, share problems and interact.
Below you will find just a few of these that are located in Ventura County.
The Ventura County Orchid Society (VCOS) meets the 4th Tuesday of the month from January to October at the Ventura Townehouse. Our excellent speakers provide valuable inforamtion about growning orchids in Southern CA. Here is their facebook page.
The Ventura County Rose Society: The Ventura County Rose Society was established in 1984. We are a non-profit Society, devoted to sharing knowledge about roses, rose culture, and the pleasure of rose gardening.
The Santa Barbara Cactus and Succulent Society (OK, it is located outside Ventura County, but still not too far away and well worth the trip). Our mission is to provide opportunities for fellowship and exchange of information among persons sharing an interest in succulents; to encourage, promote and support all aspects of the responsible collection, culture, study and conservation of succulent plants; and to provide opportunities for the exchange and exhibition of succulent plants. Click for more information.
Napolito Native Plant Nursery offers the largest selection of California-native and drought-tolerant plants in Ventura County.
They are a welcome resource in this very special niche market. Subscribe to their blog because it has great information and is so much fun to read.
And Last, but certainly not least is the Ventura County Master Gardeners Help Line.
Did you know that if you have any type of gardening question, you can call this help line and they will answer your question or get the answer for you? They also offer many workshops for the home gardener. They have very important information on integrated pest management and much more.
The helpline number is (805) 645-1455. Click for their website and more information.
